DAY 2

Nairobi - Masai Experience

Live one day the Maasai way

Today you have a magical opportunity to connect with Kenya’s proud Maasai people in an authentic and interactive way by becoming part of the hustle and bustle of Maasai village life. Having maintained a semi-nomadic way of life on their communal lands for centuries, the Maasai are well-known for their distinctive dress, valued customs and unique social and family structures, which include rites of passage and revered respect for elders. On this fun and insightful day, you'll take part in the rituals of the warriors, perform daily tasks with the women, and share much laughter and many ideas as you listen to fascinating stories and folklore.

A warm song and dance welcome awaits you at the village, and the wife of a village elder will offer to dress you in traditional Maasai shuka cloth or ‘African blanket’. You’ll also be invited to help out the women and learn their skills of constructing a new manyatta – a traditional Maasai homestead.

Time for lunch when you join the Maasai mothers to cook up a traditional Kenyan meal over an open-fire, and they'll share stories as they show you how to create your own piece of highly-decorative Maasai beaded jewelry. Then meet the young Maasai warriors, or morans, who explain their rites of passage as they become warriors, the defenders of the tribe.

They teach you how to throw a traditional spear, climb speedily up an acacia tree in the event there are predators in the bush, or even the extraordinary jumping dance, or ‘adumu’ which is how they demonstrate their prowess. Your hosts impart the knowledge of their ancient ways and are just as interested in your life as you are in theirs.

In the evening, we will drive to the Carnivore restaurant a must visit experience for a first-time Kenya visitor! The restaurant's specialty is meat, with an option of choosing between an all-you-can-eat dinner in a garden setting.

The experience works on a simple all-you-can-eat basis: as long as the paper flag on your table is flying, beautifully attired waiters will keep bringing the meat, which is carved right at the table.

DAY 4

Tsavo West National Park

07:00 hrs. – Our driver guide will pick you up from your Nairobi hotel and we’ll head out in private 4 x 4 Jeep over smooth highway with rest stops along the way to stretch and take in the views.

Once you have arrived at the camp, check in and be shown to your room where you can freshen up in time for lunch.

After lunch there are a few hours to relax and enjoy the view from your Tree hotel veranda before setting off into the bush for an afternoon game drive.

Tsavo West provides a unique step back in time - to the days when tens of thousands of giant beasts roamed this forested land. Today, the forests are gone - the result of too many elephants and too little rain - but, thanks to the abundant snowmelt from Kilimanjaro, the land continues to water a huge variety of wildlife, from elephant and buffalo to lion, leopard, oryx, lesser kudu and klipspringer. Even the dangerously depleted black rhino are making a minor comeback in a small, fiercely-guarded 70 square kilometers sanctuary.

DAY 5

Amboseli National Park | At The Foot of Kilimanjaro

We’ll be up early to take in the wondrous African sunrise as the land and the animals come to life. This is a special time in the park when the air is cool and still, reflecting the first light of the day.

One of the great surprises of Tsavo West is Mzima Springs, a naturally fed oasis brimming with wildlife, exotic fish, crocodile, hippo, and birds. We can leave our 4 x 4 Jeep for a guided walk along the green shores, taking in this idyllic landscape.

Then it’s a relatively short drive to Amboseli Park. Mt. Kilimanjaro will be your beacon, guiding you to the reserve and its busy world of wildlife. You’re guaranteed to spot herds of free-ranging elephants trooping past, with stately Kilimanjaro framing their progress.

With its sparse foliage, Amboseli is known to be an easy reserve for wildlife spotting and you’ll be busy with your guide, checking off the various hunters and grazers you see.

This park is a photographer’s dream so be ready to capture dozens of striking memories.

Toward evening, the clouds covering Kilimanjaro’s peak may disperse giving us memorable views of the mountain’s snow - capped summit.

Lamu Island is part of the Lamu Archipelago in Kenya and was built historically by Arab traders as a trade route. Some estimations put its age at around one thousand years!

Lamu Island is also known as Kenya’s oldest town, and a place with roads so narrow that cars can’t even traverse them, so transport is idyllically done through boats, donkeys and – bicycles and motorbikes are of course absolutely welcome!

DAY 7

Lamu

Today you will have a cultural trip to Lamu Town. Lamu Old Town was inscribed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO's World Heritage Centre in December 2001. UNESCO describes it as: “The oldest and best preserved Swahili settlement in

East Africa, retaining its traditional functions. Built in coral stone and mangrove timber, the Town is characterized by the simplicity of structural forms enriched by such features as inner courtyards, verandas and elaborated carved wooden doors”. Most important attractions are the fishing and vegetable markets, Lamu Fort, Lamu Museum and the whole stone Town. This is a morning trip when there is a lot of activity in the local markets.

Later, visit Matondoni Village; a local fishing village and dhow building site. The village is located on the western side of Lamu Island, about 8 kms from Lamu Town. The village is famous for traditional handicrafts such as weaving straw mats of palm leaves and making ropes of coconut. The excursion is organized as a half day trip and it’s done by either motor-boat or on a traditional Mozambique-style dhow sailing boat.

WOW!!!!!! Let's just say, it would be very difficult to verbalize how great our trip was as a result of booking with Certified Africa. My wife and I are avid travelers, touching 16 countries so far. We usually create our own itinerary and almost ALWAYS focus on hanging with locals to gain the most intimate and organic experiences possible. Nonetheless, this was our 15-year Anniversary trip and thought it would be a great idea to allow someone else to plan the trip and sit back and enjoy it. With only an introduction call to discuss some must haves and our set budget, Certified Africa DELIVERED!!!!!!!! Creating a custom itinerary that blew our minds and expectations. We have already begun planning our Tanzania and Zanzibar trip for 2022. From me and my beautiful wife to you........What are you waiting for????????????? Book your next trip to the Motherland with the only travel company we feel comfortable recommending, Certified Africa! Richard and Raquel
