Ghana Twins Festival & Homowo 2026
A Journey of Cultural Homecoming
Join Certified Africa for an extraordinary cultural immersion as we experience the vibrant Twins/Homowo Festival in Jamestown, Accra—one of Ghana's most significant traditional celebrations. This isn't just a trip; it's a homecoming to ancestral roots, a spiritual celebration, and an opportunity to witness centuries-old traditions that continue to thrive today.
🎭 About the Festivals
The Homowo Festival: "Hooting at Hunger"
Homowo (meaning "hooting at hunger") is a magnificent harvest celebration of the Ga people in Ghana. This centuries-old tradition commemorates their ancestors' triumph over a devastating famine. During the festival, the streets of Accra and surrounding Ga communities come alive with:
- Sacred Food Rituals: The preparation and sprinkling of Kpokpoi (fermented cornmeal and palm nut soup) by chiefs and traditional priests to thank the gods and ancestors
- Vibrant Processions: Communities dressed in traditional white and red attire, with drumming (Kpanlogo rhythms), singing, and dancing filling the streets
- Ancestral Homecoming: People of Ga descent return to their ancestral coastal communities, transforming quiet villages into vibrant centers of celebration
- Fishing Rituals: Coastal communities honor Nai Wulomo (the sea god) with offerings for protection and good catches
The Twins Festival: A Sacred Celebration
One of the most fascinating aspects of Homowo is the Twins Festival. In Ga culture, twins hold sacred status and are believed to bring special blessings to their families. During this celebration:
- Twins of all ages dress in white and participate in purification rituals
- Communities parade twins through towns with music and dancing
- The community seeks blessings from these special children
💫 Why This Experience is Different
While Homowo focuses on thanksgiving for harvest and ancestral remembrance, the Twins Festival celebrates the divine gift of twins within this cultural framework. Together, they create a rich tapestry of Ga heritage—and you'll experience it all from the inside, not as an observer.
👨👩👧👦 A Personal Story: Why This Journey Matters
👋 A Personal Note from Kristin Tellis Quaye
Co-Founder & CEO, Certified Africa
In 2024, my husband Nii Armah Quaye (who is Ga from Jamestown) and I were blessed with twin boys. Their arrival immediately immersed us into the rich cultural traditions surrounding twins in Ga culture—traditions that would transform our connection to Ghana forever.
Coming Home to Jamestown
Our twins' birth reconnected my husband with his ancestral house in Jamestown, Accra. His paternal grandfather descended from a lineage of Wulomei—traditional priests and custodians of Ga land who serve as spiritual intermediaries between the community and their deities. These sacred roles are hereditary, passed down through specific family lineages for generations.
When our twins were born, we needed to complete proper twin rites through traditional consultations with Numo Ayitey Cobblah III, the Wulomo who presides over Nii's ancestral house. Through these ceremonies, we discovered something remarkable: one of the primary reasons our twins came to us was to bring my husband back home to his paternal community.
🌟 An Incredible Full Circle Moment
Here's where the story gets truly magical: Jamestown—the very community our twins brought us back to—is the exact place where Nii and I first met in 2016 at the iconic Jamestown lighthouse! What seemed like a chance encounter eight years ago was actually the beginning of a journey that would bring us full circle to this ancestral home.
My Cultural Transformation
Participating in these twin rites and Homowo celebrations has been transformative. The experience of being inside these festivals rather than just observing them has given me a profound appreciation of Ga culture. In fact, connecting with the community during the Festival sparked my interest to take learning Ga more seriously.
I hope to serve as a Griot—a keeper of culture and history, someone who shares Ga culture globally. I recently started formal Ga language lessons, and I'm extremely excited about this journey of cultural stewardship.
